Android Wear Introduces Watch Faces Powered by Watch Face API

Android Wear smartwatches just became more customizable. In an announcement on the official Android blog, Director of Engineering David Singleton announced Android Wear would be releasing dozens of new watch faces onto the Google Play store. This is all thanks to the development of Android’s official Watch Face API.

According to Android Developer Advocate Wayne Piekarski, “watch faces have been the most requested feature from users and developers alike.” In response to this increasing demand, Android developed their own Watch Face API. The API is now available to developers to create their own watch faces for Android Wear watches, and also allows developers to upload their designs to the Google Play store for other Android Wear owners to download.

Google Play currently offers dozens of designs for Android Wear owners to choose from. Watch face designers currently range from Rebecca Minkoff to Porsche to Red Bull. Because Watch Face API is available for all developers to use, more designs are expected to be uploaded in the weeks and months to come.

The Android Wear operating system is currently compatible with six smartwatches available for purchase: the ASUS ZenWatch, the LG G Watch, the LG G Watch R, the Moto 360, the Samsung Gear Live, and the Sony SmartWatch 3. Each watch is different in shape and size, emphasizing customization. These smartwatches are paired with Android mobile phones and integrate technology and mobile notifications from Google Now.
