Dialog Semiconductor’s new Wearable-on-Chip integrates top functions


German semiconductor manufacturer, Dialog Semiconductor PLC, is looking to greatly affect to the wearables and Internet of Things (IoT) sectors with its new SmartBond DA14680 “Wearable-on-Chip” with Bluetooth Smart (v.42) connectivity.

The DA14680 simplifies the customization of a wearable or IoT device with a single chip. Usually, product designers go for multiple-chip solutions because of the amount of options they allow. But with Dialog’s single chip, designers and engineers can decrease system costs, lower power consumption, and create an overall smaller form factor.

“The wearables market is fiercely competitive in terms of design aesthetics, cost, functionality, battery life and product life cycle,” said Sean McGrath, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Connectivity, Automotive & Industrial Business Group of Dialog Semiconductor.

“Dialog’s Bluetooth Smart Wearable-on-Chip gives our customers significant competitive advantage with respect to all of these factors, freeing them to concentrate on innovation for differentiating functionality to add to the next generation of wearables.”

Indeed, the chip offers a multitude of important features for wearable devices while keeping designers’ visions in mind. For instance, the chip’s hardware supports different types of batteries. Sensors can also be added to or removed from the DA14680. And finally, the chip has flexible flash memory, as well as the ability to control processor speed.
