Google first announced the DVF | Made for Glass collection earlier in June via their Google+ Google Glass page, but the exclusive glasses just became available as of last week on Net-a-Porter and the Glass site. The collaboration with fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg and Google Glass shows Google’s continued efforts to make Glass more fashionable and appealing to a larger audience outside of early technology adopters.
The partnership between Google and DVF traces back to 2012 during that year’s New York Fashion Week, in which Glass was supplied to her entire team of designers, stylists, makeup artists and models. The footage that was taken using Glass from Fashion Week was then turned into behind-the-scenes video – DVF [through Google Glass] – narrated by von Furstenberg herself.
The “Made for Glass” collection includes five new frames and eight new shades that were designed specifically for women, helping bring Glass to an even wider audience. In discussing the design for the glasses, von Furstenberg simply stated that “I love the aviator shape, so I went with aviator…And then I went for the shield, which I love.” The DVF frames are priced at $225, and the shades at $120. On Net-a-Porter, you can only purchase the bundle, which includes the headpiece, a pair of the designer DVF frames, and a pair of the DVF shades. The bundle however will set you back $1,800.
