If you’ve been eagerly anticipating the HTC Vive headset and you’re a developer, today is your lucky day. You can now apply to receive a HTC Vive Developer Edition on Steam. Best of all, the development kit is free.
The developer’s headset has two 1200 by 1800 pixel screens, one for each eye, which refresh at a 90 frames per second rate. It has a gyrosensor, accelerometer, and laser position sensor to monitor head position. It also has a custom VR game controller and an audio jack for headphones.
HTC Vive’s development kit is using the SteamVR platform. In a blogpost on Steam’s website, Valve writer Chet Faliszek said, “Our goal is to support as many VR content creators as possible and, to that end, we will be distributing dev kits continually, with new units going out every couple weeks.”
“However,” Chet noted, “supplies may be limited.” Because of the small supply available, the application process may be incredibly competitive.
For developers looking for other resources, Steam has created the Steam VR Developer Community. The community, which is open to the public, will serve as a forum for developers to discuss their progress and for Valve to share updates about SteamVR and the HTC Vive hardware.
The HTC Vive development kit will be a big help in creating content for the the general public to use when the product goes on sale. According to the HTC Vive website, the consumer product will be available during the holiday season.
