NHL Teams Up With GoPro

GoPro, the National Hockey League (NHL), and the NFL Players’ Association (NHLPA) have announced a partnership that will put GoPro cameras on the ice. NHL broadcasts are using GoPro’s Professional Broadcast Solution and cameras to give television viewers real-time HD footage of hockey games.

Calling this partnership “unprecedented,” the NHL is planning to use GoPros to bring hockey fans closer to the action. Bob Chesterman, NHL Senior Vice President of Programming and Production, called GoPro “the perfect partner for us in our ongoing commitment to bring hockey fans closer to the game.”

GoPro cameras were used for the first time during the 2015 NHL All-Star Weekend in Columbus, Ohio on January 23-25. The cameras were worn by players and referees, and placed around the arena throughout the weekend. Recordings created point-of-view footage at multiple angles for the All-Star Skills Competition and the All-Star Game.

The NHL plans to use pre-recorded GoPro footage throughout the season, but Chesterman says the league doesn’t anticipate putting cameras on players during regular season. However, the partnership has already received some great reception from both NHL fans and GoPro users. Though GoPro cameras are used by the National Football League, Major League Soccer, and Barclays Premier League in England on referees, they have yet to impliment GoPro footage into their broadcasts.

GoPro will be getting a lot of exposure throughout the remainder of the NHL season thanks to the partnership. According to the NHL’s press release, GoPro “will receive prominent brand exposure across the NHL’s broadcast, digital and social media platforms.”
